Exploring US-80 3

Driving across the eastern portion of US-80 in Louisiana you can frequently find sections of the Dixie Overland Highway.  This section was abandoned as the "modern" US-80 was built in the 1930's.  The contemporary railroad to the right closely follows the route of the Vicksburg, Shreveport, and Texas line which was completed from Vicksburg, Mississippi to Monroe, Louisiana in 1861.  In the six months the line operated before being taken over by the Confederate States of America it carried 12,000 passengers.  (source: www.csa-railroads.com)
